Sanford Health 32nd & Ellis Clinic
Sanford Health inaugurated a 42,000-square-foot clinic in West Sioux Falls in 2018, representing a $22 million investment and designed with provisions for a future Emergency Department. The facility is organized into four distinct pods radiating from a central spine, establishing a clear circulation hierarchy while fostering spatial orientation and cohesion. The central spine functions as the primary axis, with illuminated gateways marking the entrances to each specialty pod. These gateways employ channel glass to diffuse light and create a sense of arrival, while timber beams extend from the structure, reinforcing both spatial definition and Sanford Health’s Collegiate Gothic architectural identity.
A shared waiting and reception area serves as the central hub, enhancing the patient experience while supporting clear visual connections throughout the building. The design carefully integrates multiple services—including pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, acute care, behavioral health, occupational medicine, and laboratory and radiology facilities—into a coherent architectural program. Legibility, accessibility, and material expression are emphasized, with the interplay of light, timber, and glass reinforcing both wayfinding and the institution’s distinct architectural character.
