The Yard

South 75th Street, once a lively retail corridor supporting a dynamic suburban neighborhood on Chicago’s south side, now experiences a less energetic economic climate. However, there is a renewed effort to infuse vitality into the community through the creation of The Yard, a bar and restaurant envisioned by a local business owner.

Its concept is straightforward: a gathering place for the community that encourages local spending. Multiple iterations of the project occurred to align the concept with the budget, partially funded by a grant from the City of Chicago.

The building’s exterior maintains a simple form, harmonizing with the rhythm of its context while honoring the existing materials of the neighborhood, primarily brick—a signature feature of Chicago. Activating the public realm was a crucial aspect of this project, injecting much-needed energy and fostering a sense of community intended to enhance the area’s public perception.
